Rough-textured hay cloths

Hotel Valentinerhof

Siusi allo Sciliar

The hotel in Siusi allo Sciliar / Castelrotto is an internationally awarded design hotel. The result of noa architects' effort to combine traditional with modern aspects and to focus on the beauty of nature was rewarded with the European Hotel Design Award in London in 2012.

The hotel, realized entirely with natural materials with its impressive architecture, lies in the midst of alpine pastures and offers an outstanding panoramic view.

Sternbach provides the carpets for the rebuilding and develops together with Hermann Kühbacher, presumably the last traditional weaver in the Val Pusteria, hand-made woven hay cloth for wall decoration. These hay cloths, so-called „Plouchn,“ often used to be made from worn-out bed linen which were then sewed together. For these „Plouchn,“ rough-textured linen, the so-called „Rupfane,“ was used.
